A fast-moving fire swept through a historic district of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, killing at least 78 people.

The blaze broke out last night in a residential building that had flammable material stored on one floor.

Members of a bridal party are thought to be among the victims. It is not yet clear what started the fire.

The centuries-old Chawkbazar district has narrow streets and buildings very close to each other.

Fire officials said, dozens of people were trapped in the buildings, unable to escape onto narrow streets clogged with traffic, as the highly combustible stores of chemicals, body sprays and plastic granules erupted in flames.
