German Chancellor Angela Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Germany “takes total responsibility for crimes committed” by the Nazis in Greece.

The German Chancellor was speaking in Athens during an official visit to Greece.

The German Chancellor also met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and President Prokopis Pavlopoulos during her first visit after the country’s exit from its international bailout program in august.

Visits by German chancellor in 2012 and 2014 were overshadowed by angry anti-austerity rallies.

Merkel’s latest visit is seen as a chance to leave behind a fraught period caused by tough German demands for Greek austerity accompanying bailouts from the European Union during the Euro-zone sovereign debt crisis.

Greece has also been deeply affected by the European refugee and migrant crisis in recent years.
