Since 18 September 2018 Susanna Terstal has been the EU Special
Representative for the Middle East Peace Process. The tasks of the Special
Representative are to contribute to actions and initiatives leading to a final
settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution.
She will actively support and contribute to peace negotiations between the
From 2015-2018 Susanna Terstal was Dutch Ambassador to the Islamic
Republic of Iran. During the first two years of her posting to Iran she also
represented the European Union in the absence of an EU delegation.
In 2012 she was posted to Angola as Dutch Ambassador. Prior to this she
was deputy head of mission at the Permanent Representation of the
Netherlands to the UN in Geneva, where she was responsible for the UN
organisations working in the areas of health and humanitarian affairs.
Susanna Terstal joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in
1994. She began her career in the legal directorate, where she held different
positions, also working on European issues. Before working for the ministry
she worked in the private sector.
Susanna Terstal studied in the Netherlands, United States and Italy. She is a
lawyer and has Masters in Political Science, International Relations and
Italian language and literature. She speaks Dutch (mother tongue), English,
Italian, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese.
