A federal inquiry has been ordered into a rape allegation against a lawmaker in India’s Uttar Pradesh State.Kuldeep Singh Sengar, 50, from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is accused of raping a 16-year-old girl last year – an allegation he denies.

The victim tried to kill herself last week in front of the chief minister’s home after alleging that the police had refused to register her case.

Her father died last week after clashes with Sengar’s supporters.
Activists say the allegations against Sengar are very serious and he should have been arrested immediately.
