Thousands of Chileans took to the streets of Santiago calling on the government to provide improved and inclusive housing to the city’s poorest residents.

Some 5,000 men, women and children proceeded through the city carrying banners and lighting flares and fireworks in the national march for the right to housing.

According to organizers, housing has become a major issue in Chile with many Chileans living in overcrowded conditions or camps.

Many blame real estate speculation, saying that housing has become a consumer good reducing access to those who can pay.
