Mr Trump has said that Sweden is a great country that the US has cooperated with for about 200 years. “Our relations have never been better,” he added that Swedes are terrific people.
Mr Löfven said that “I am convinced that increased tariffs will hurt us all in the long run, and as a Swede I of course support the efforts of the European Union to achieve trade with as few obstacles as possible,” Mr Löfven is the first European head of government to meet the US President since he announced his intention to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium.
Following the press conference, the Swedish Embassy in Washington hosted a reception to celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and the United States.
The aim of the meeting was to further deepen relations between Sweden and the United States. Another important area of discussion was Sweden–US cooperation in external relations, defence and security.
