Hundreds of Palestinians gathered outside Al-Quds to celebrate the removal of Israeli security measures from entrances to the Aqsa mosque.

Muslims have been holding prayers outside the mosque in protest and clashing with Israeli Security since Israel installed new security measures around Al-Aqsa compound, following the shooting to death of two policemen at the site.

The violence touched off the bloodiest clashes between Israel and Palestinians in years.

On Wednesday, Israel removed the metal detectors from the entrances to the compound in hope to calm days of unrest, but Palestinians have said the modified measures are still unacceptable.

The dispute, like many in the Holy Land, is about much more than security devices, taking in issues of sovereignty, religious freedom, occupation and Palestinian nationalism.
