German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, authorities believe a deadly rampage by a lorry driver at a Berlin Christmas market was a “Terrorist” attack likely committed by an asylum seeker.

Talking to reporters in Berlin Markel said according to what we know, we have to assume this was a Terrorist attack.

She said it will be hard to confirm that the person who committed this attack sought protection and asylum in Germany.

A man ploughed a lorry into a Christmas market in the heart of Berlin Monday, killing 12 people and injuring 48.

German media say police have searched a Refugee shelter at a Berlin airport where the asylum seeker is believed to be staying.

The truck, which was loaded with steel beams, veered into the market at one of its busiest times, crashing through wooden huts and stands packed with tourists and locals.

Police confirmed that a passenger was found dead in the lorry, and said he was a Polish National. There are fears he may have been the original driver of the vehicle, and that he was subject to a hijacking.
