The UAE Royals overcame the Indian Aces 30-20 to win their international premier tennis league match-up in Saitama, Japan and move top of the IPTL standings. The Royals were inspired early by Switzerland’s Martina Hingis, who blew past the aces’ Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 6-4 in the women’s singles, before combining with Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas to see off Indian pair Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles. The aces never really got close and were seen off by Czech Tomas Berdych, who comfortably beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the men’s singles to complete a 30-20 victory and move the Royals top of the ITPL standings. In the second match, Kei Nishikori beat Nick Kyrgios over one set, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Japan Warriors falling to defeat against the Singapore Slammers. The Warriors were already trailing when Nishikori took to the court for the final set in his home country, and despite a 9-4 overtime win against Kyrgios, he could not reduce the deficit enough to prevent the slammers claiming an overall 27-23 result. Kiki Bertens and Carlos Moya had already won one-sided sets for the slammers, before Kyrgios teamed up with Marcelo Melo to Trump Nishikori and Fernando Verdasco in the men’s doubles. The Warriors and the slammers are now tied on four points in the overall standings, going into the next round of matches in Singapore starting on Tuesday.
