In Uganda, police have arrested the king of the independent kingdom of Rwenzururu, Charles Wesley Mumbere, on the charge of inciting tribal militias against the central government.

His arrest came after clashes between police and militia which killed at least fifty-five people, including fourteen police personnel.

Security forces stormed his palace amid claims that he was harbouring rebel militia.

A Ugandan government spokesman accused the militia of seeking to break away from Uganda.

The king has denied the charge of supporting the tribal militia.
