LAHORE, Ghazanfar Mehmood of Garden City Golf Club
showed his strength and golf playing prowess and through a strong display of skills emerged as the leader of gross section in the prestigious 6th Chief of Naval Staff Golf Championship and edged past the overnight leader Robin Bagh on the conclusion of the second round here on Saturday at Royal Palm club course.
Ghazanfar played with accuracy and precision to shatter the confidence of Robin who seemed disintegrated and fell to the third position in the race for honors.
Robin Bagh who played exceedingly well on the first day had a miserable round on the second day and looked distraught and pained with his poor showing .
Ashiq Hussain of Multan who was placed second after the first round yesterday, Friday, maintained his position as the championship moves into the final phase .With rounds of 70 and 76 gross ,he has an aggregate score of 146 while the leader Ghazanfar is at 144.Nadeem Aslam of Garrison now lies fourth with scores of an average 80 and an impressive and far improved71.Tariq Mehmood ended the second day at an aggregate score of 152 followed by the champion Mohammad Rehman of Royal Palm Golf Club.
This championship now moves into the final phase and contenders to final honors are all geared up for a decisive final go on tomorrow, Sunday over 18 holes.
The net section is dominated by Asif Bajwa ,a former hockey player who has taken to golf and succeeded in sharpening his golfing expertise. On the first day he had a score of net 68 and on Saturday he managed a net 71,the total adding upto net 139,five under par.In second position is Farid Malik with scores of net 67 and 74.
The final day will provide a contest of fierce competition and Ghazanfar seeks to again be the dominant one while Ashiq ,Rehman and Tariq look forward to outdoing him.
At the conclusion of the championship on Sunday the prize distribution will be held at 330pm at the Royal Palm Golf Club Lawns.The Governor Punjab ,Muhammad Rafiq Rajwana will be the chief guest on the occasion.
