The United Nations has held government troops responsible for a growing share of civilian casualties.

The UN’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto in a statement in Kabul said that increased fighting in densely populated areas makes it imperative for parties to take immediate steps to save civilians from losses.

The UN official said at least 2,562 civilians were killed and another 5,835 wounded in the conflict in the first nine months of this year.
